There is talk that Samsung is talking with RIM about an acquisition. Here are a few thoughts on that topic.
Five years ago Apple changed the wireless industry with the iPhone. Next Google Android joined in and the two of them rule the space.
Other carriers are growing rapidly, but still only account for a fraction of the market.
Samsung is one of the companies who has a strong array of products among all major service providers, but they don’t have the aurora. That invisible force that gives them that something special. Without that aurora they will remain a strong second tier company.
Samsung acquiring RIM might just give them that aurora that could propel them into the first tier competitors along side Apple iPhone and Google Android.
Whether a RIM acquisition would actually work for them has yet to be answered. RIM was a hot and growing company over the last decade, but has lost its way.
They have not been able to update their brand and remain relevant and are on the downside of the Wave which they rode for a decade.
Samsung would have to update the brand and expand it to include smart phones in such a way to compete with Apple and Google.
It’s not a guarantee, but is a bet possibly worth taking if the price is right because Samsung needs to burst through to the next level.
