We are quickly approaching a serious problem in the wireless industry. We are running out of wireless data spectrum. What does that mean? Slowdowns and outages when trying to use one of the many Apps like watching television, movies, using GPS and navigation. Many Apps are for play, but many more are serious and will all be impacted.
Wireless voice will be fine. However we will begin to have wireless data problems starting next year in 2013.
This is serious.
The problem is Apple. At this point the problem is beyond just Apple. It also includes Google Android and all the smart phone and tablet computer makers. But the problem started with Apple.
Five years ago Apple introduced the first iPhone and changed the industry. Five years ago smart phone growth was slow and predictable. Five years ago we only had a few hundred Apps and they were not widely used.
Then the Apple iPhone was born and the entire industry shifted.
Now wireless data usage through hundreds of thousands of Apps is squeezing the networks dry.
Carriers like AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel tried for years go fire up the App market. Then when Apple jumped in five years ago it happened overnight.
Suddenly the carriers and Apple and Google got their wishes granted.
However like with the Genie in Aladdin there is always a price to be paid.
In this case we will start to experience significant slowdowns and outages as early as next year.
That is unless we can come up with a solution to this sudden and rapidly growing problem.
Yesterday Apple made some announcements that sound great, but will further stress the wireless data networks.
Things continue to get worse. Let’s hope we can come up with a solution before it’s too late.
