According to the Wall Street Journal there is news on the AT&T T-Mobile front.
AT&T is taking steps which indicate they understand the uphill battle they face in acquiring T-Mobile. That does not mean the deal is dead however. It will just be on the back burner for a while.
Remember when SBC tried to acquire AT&T in the 1990′s. Reed Hundt, then Chairman of the FCC said that attempt was “UNTHINKABLE”. SBC withdrew their plans and we thought it was over. However a few years later SBC tried once again and this time was successful. SBC acquired AT&T and then took their name.
Today SBC is AT&T. They could take the same path once again.
I think the US Government is saying this deal is not going to happen. And I believe them. Today. However don’t be surprised if AT&T tries once again in a few quarters or years.
AT&T says this deal will create jobs, but they have not convinced me yet. I don’t see how this deal will create more jobs than AT&T and T-Mobile would on their own. This sounds like something AT&T is saying trying to get the deal approved.
So will this deal happen now? No, I don’t think it will in its present form.
Will this deal happen down the road is the question.
The game is not over for AT&T. It is just the end of the first inning. There is still a long game ahead.
