Barry Diller stood behind this new idea of delivering television over the Internet and competing with the traditional cable television industry.
Today the judge agreed with Diller and Aeveo is going to be a competitor in the industry going forward.
This is potentially one of the big news items in this now rapidly changing pay television industry.
We have been complaining about the cost and quality of traditional cable television over the years.
This looks like the year the transformation of the industry will begin to really take place.
First we had cable television. The price kept increasing year after year.
Then we had satellite. We expected the price to decrease. It didn’t. It kept rising.
Next we had telephone companies offering their IPTV like AT&T uVerse and Verizon FiOS. That didn’t decrease the price either.
However traditional cable television companies are finally losing market share as new technology and new ideas let new competitors enter the space.
Customers are buying antennas and watching a couple dozen free television channels, and paying for movies over the Internet from companies like Netflix.
Now Aeveo joins the fray letting customers have another choice from the Internet.
Later this year Apple iTV and Google TV should join the fray as well.
It looks like the changes that are starting to occur in the television space are real and are rapidly starting to change the industry.
As you can see there are many new innovative ideas in the marketplace today. And innovation means more will enter.
This may finally mean pricing will start to come down.
The traditional cable television model has been broken for years. Maybe this will fix it. Maybe. It’s a great start anyway.
