The San Diego Chargers, despite winning six of their past seven games, don’t hold their own playoff destiny in their hands as they sit in second place in the AFC West. And it’s likely the team won’t have All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates for at least the rest of the regular season.
Gates has missed the past two games and four of six with a painful tear in his right plantar fascia. He wasn’t expected to play in the last few games of the regular season because of increased pain and decreased effectiveness following a Dec. 5 loss to Oakland, but Gates had refused to rule himself out. Now he has basically done that, with the hope that more rest will make him full strength if the Chargers get into the playoffs. In order to do that, San Diego will need to win this week in Cincinnati and next week in Denver and hope the Kansas City Chiefs lose one of their final two home games. San Diego is a 7.5-point favorite on Bodog’s NFL odds this week against the Bengals.
“Time is the key. There’s not magical treatment for an injury like this,” Gates said. “Just because I hope to come back if we end up making the postseason, there’s no guarantee that I’ll be able to go. It gives me a chance.”
Gates said the team’s other tight ends, Randy McMichael and Kris Wilson, are more than capable of doing the job. Gates added he will have had four weeks of rest if the Chargers do make the playoffs. He leads the team with 50 catches for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns.
