Cable TV is Next Target for Apple | Jeff Kagan Tech Analyst
As successful as they appear to be, Apple has not won at everything they have tried. Television is one example. They have tried with Apple iTV over the last few years and have not really done well.
Now Apple is talking with cable television operators in the United States trying once again to get into the television business.
Apple sees television as the next big frontier.
They need willing partners and that’s the rub. As Apple partnered with companies in the music business and the wireless business they always started playing nice.
Then when they took off they left others behind in the dust.
That is the fear of companies in the cable television industry as well. Apple can’t hide from their past. So going forward will be a rougher ride for the company.
Once Apple get’s a toe in the industry, it’s over. Today’s leaders will give way to Apple. That is the threat and that’s why other companies are very reluctant to partner with Apple.
Just look at wireless for an example. Over the last fifteen years both Nokia and RIM Blackberry were number one. Then the Apple iPhone entered and changed the space. Now these companies are struggling to survive and grow.
Apple has tried to crack the television space for years and have been unsuccessful so far.
There are benefits to the cable television industry. Apple will make the set top boxes and that will save the companies plenty of aggravation and money.
However everyone now knows that Apple never gives anything without a reason. And the reason is enough to choke other businesses, both partners and competitors.
We’ll have to keep our eyes on this.
