John Wysner Traces the Life-Shaping Events of His Own Life, Family Members

“Although ‘Family: A Life Poem’ is the story of my family and coming of age as a part of that story, in many ways, it carries elements of every family: in the love of parents and the parenting of children and even grandchildren,” writes Wysner. “It is also the story of the dreams that parents hold for their children, the response of children to these dreams, and making them a part of their own lives and futures. Finally, it chronicles battling a powerful foe, bipolar illness, that brings terrible pain into their lives.”
“Family: A Life Poem” discusses loss and love in painstaking detail, often delving into the minutia of relationships between various family members. Wysner’s poem, “Hands,” does just this, connecting to very different pathways towards personal strength between Wysner and his father. He writes:
I look at my hands,
now sixty-four years old.
And I can see
in the shape,
nails,
wrinkles,
age spots,
his hands.
Over the eighty-four years of his life,
he earned the gnarled,
scarred,
powerful fingers
(one lost
in a shop accident). …
It was not until,
late in life,
after years of
football,
weight training,
running …
that my own hands,
would match
the history of his.
Written by a college and professional athlete, owner and operator of a highly successful business and consulting firm, author of four business management books and one poetry collection, “Family: A Life Poem” delivers a powerful message about overcoming great adversity to succeed in life.
