AT&T and T-Mobile had hoped their original merger would be approved. Not likely.
AT&T still needs a solution to their looming spectrum shortage.
Instead of acquiring T-Mobile they are now contemplating pooling their spectrum together and both companies could access it.
AT&T’s perspective; it is not as good as owning, but at least they would get a few more lanes on their highway and that would solve their traffic tie ups.
That’s right. In fact that is so right I think we should expand that thinking to the entire industry.
Every carrier could put their spectrum into one big pool. Every carrier and every handset maker could access it all. Carriers could first try to access their own spectrum. No cost to them. If that was full, they could use other spectrum in the pool and compensate the pool or the owner of that spectrum.
Simple solution. That is what I have been talking about for months. It makes perfect sense to me. We have to work out and agree to the particulars, but this solves the problem every carrier will face in the next few years.
This is the solution that we should be debating.
Cheers to AT&T and T-Mobile for this new angle. I think we can all be behind this general idea.
Now if we can get them to open their mind to the rest of the industry, and get the rest of the industry to open their minds to this solution as well.
That would be the beginning of solving this looming spectrum crisis.
