Nokia Hangs on to Number One Position | Jeff Kagan Tech Analyst
According to the Wall Street Journal… Nokia hung on to the number one spot in 3Q in the global cell phone market.
How long will they hang on to this position? Nokia and RIM are shrinking while competitors are growing.
Samsung is coming close to passing Nokia.
The Nokia portion of global handset sales fell to 27% from 32% last year. Samsung rose to 22% from 21% during the same period. Nokia sold 106 million phones. Samsung sold 88 million phones.
Samsung sold more than Apple in 3Q. Samsung shipped 28 million and Apple shipped 17 million. The reason Apple slipped to fifth place in the global handset market during this 3Q period is the new iPhone 4s was just launched in 4Q. Customers waited to buy.
3Q is always a tough sell. Not only is it the quarter before Apple launched their next version, but its also the quarter just before the biggest quarter of the year, the holiday shopping season.
I see Apple and Google continuing to sell record numbers of phones. I see Samsung also growing rapidly. Other handset makers also show strong growth.
I see Nokia and RIM, past leaders, continuing their decline with no end in site.
The wireless industry is in the process of reinventing itself, once again.
