All of a sudden Verizon Wireless is experiencing AT&T Mobility problems. Verizon has not discussed the source of the problem. Either they don’t know or they don’t want to say.
This is embarrassing to Verizon Wireless since it claims to be the best quality network.
The problem is the sudden shift to wireless data services. Four years ago this wasn’t a problem. Four years ago there was no iPhone or Android. Four years ago the smart phone market was basically RIM Blackberry.
Everything is changing. High speed wireless data services are exploding. Over the next couple years we can expect voice to account for only 3% of the traffic on the networks. The rest is wireless data. It’s text, email, web, video, audio and everything else that is coming.
The wireless industry is changing over the last several years. It is a different place.
This raises many problems with carriers trying to stay ahead of the demand curve. If they install and upgrade too quickly they have to raise rates. That is not the solution. If they install and upgrade too slowly customers have these quality problems.
Keeping the right balance is key. It is also almost impossible.
So as users we had better get used to these kind of outages for a while. A sign of progress I guess.
