ZTE Corp has been marketing low cost and low end wireless handsets to the US market. They are apparently realizing there is more money in the smartphone market.

So starting in 2012 they will be switching and will begin selling higher end smart phones.

This high end market is more profitable to be sure, however it is also much more competitive. Companies like Google, Apple, HTC and Samsung already own a large part of this market. Most handset makers are trying to carve out a niche in this large and growing segment.

Nokia is taking a similar path. They too are trying to sell smart phones with limited success so far. And they have the well known Nokia brand at their disposal.

So how successful will ZTE be in the smart phone market? It depends.

It depends how good their devices are. It depends how they compared to what is already hot in the marketplace. It depends how well they market and advertise. It depends if they can build a relationship with the customers who already have a relationship with other smart phone makers.

There are allot of unknowns at this point.

ZTE has aggressive plans in the US marketplace. Will they offer something new? Something better? Will they capture the imagination of the marketplace? Will they capture the attention of the media and customers?

We’ll just have to watch and see how well they move in this growing and juicy segment.
