This earnings report and call was full of bad news. The numbers were bad. Worse than we hoped. And their next generation device which was expected this fall, now won’t be available until next year.
I had dinner with RIM executives last month and while I like the people and the company, it just is not performing well at all.
Can RIM recover is the question we are now asking. They still have customers who love them, but they are simply loosing business too quickly.
This is a case of being punched in the gut, time after time, without the chance to catch their breath.
Remember what happened with companies like Lucent a decade ago. They still stayed in business, but as a shadow of the great company they were just a year or two earlier.
Does RIM have the same future in store? I hope not, but this seems to be the track they are on right now.
They need a quick turnaround. What are the chances? I don’t think they understand the kind of technology customers want, and I don’t think they understand marketing, advertising and public relations.
I hope for the best. The industry needs another choice. RIM is a great additional choice, if they can get their act together. That’s a big IF.
