Strike two.

Verizon Wireless has seemed almost untouchable, however recently they have been having a few serious outages. One was several weeks ago. Customers grumbled, but basically let it pass.

Today Verizon Wireless seems to be experiencing another wireless data outage.

The company has not commented on either.

What is happening?

I have a feeling we can expect more of these outages, not less. In fact from all the carriers, not just Verizon. It’s just that Verizon is under the gun right now.

We are not hearing from Verizon about this because they obviously don’t yet know what the problem is and how to correct it.

Outages happen. As the wireless world becomes more about wireless data we can experience more of these outages.

The wireless world is becoming more about wireless data, not voice. In fact over the next three years we can expect wireless data from smart phones to account for 97% of network traffic. That means only 3% of traffic will be voice. That’s an incredible and rapid shift. And there is a price to be paid.

That means we will experience more of these outages as the networks struggle to keep up with the rapid and growing demand.

Expect wireless data traffic to explode during the holidays starting this week with Chanukah, then Christmas and the weeks following. We should brace for impact of all those users gobbling all that wireless data. Sounds like the right atmosphere for outages and slowdowns.
