Harlem Pride

In 2010, Harlem Pride’s founders saw an opportunity to celebrate not just our Same Gender Loving/LGBT community, but its role and contributions to Harlem’s rich history and thus Harlem Pride was born. MISSION Our mission is to advocate for, educate, promote, and unite Harlem’s Same Gender Loving/LGBT individuals, organizations and supporters in cultivating a sense of honor, dignity and respect for our diverse culture and community. THE TERM “SAME GENDER LOVING” We adopted the use of “Same-gender-loving”, or “SGL” to be inclusive of the identities of members of our Harlem community. It is a term coined for African American use by activist Cleo Manago, and is a description for homosexuals and bisexuals, particularly in the African American community. It emerged in the early 1990s as a culturally affirming African American homosexual/bisexual identity. VISION To base our activities within the boundaries of Harlem, from the East River to the Hudson, from 110th Street to 155th Street and beyond. (Community Districts 9, 10, and 11) To bring visibility and a voice to our Harlem SGL/LGBT community.
