Author Offers Exciting Alternative to Well-known Tale of Historic Vessel

Palmdale, CA, June 22, 2009 — The popular story about why the Titanic sank is as epic as it is tragic. But what if the shocking end to its maiden voyage were instead the consequence of a conspiracy? In author Kevin Wright Carney’s exciting new novel, “A Cold Night in the Atlantic” (published by AuthorHouse), he presents an alternative history involving cover-ups and greed.

When two sailors take the long dive to the present-day ruins of the R.M.S. Titanic, they make an unusual discovery that calls into question the ship’s conventional history. Equipment with serial numbers that belong to other ships and a trove of gold are found in the ship’s stern. Carney then transports readers back to the secluded offices of the ship line’s owners, where the conspiracy that brought down this infamous vessel is born.

In the Titanic’s time, its owner and the owner of the other ships on the White Star Line, J.P. Morgan, ponders whether Captain Edward J. Smith should be relieved of duty. He’s caused several at-sea incidents, most notably involving the R.M.S. Olympic, the Titanic’s predecessor and sister ship. Fast-forward one year to 1912, when the White Star Line executives are told that because of the Olympic’s accidents, it is not seaworthy and therefore uninsurable. With the Titanic about to sail, the executives scheme to switch the two ships’ identities, deliberately sink the so-called Titanic and collect the insurance payments to build another vessel, thus having two Titanic-quality ships at their disposal.

At the historic launch of the Titanic in April 1912, only a handful of men aware of the conspiracy are aboard, and they are armed with enough gold to buy the silence of anyone who discovers the plot during the voyage. But their plot does not go as planned. Liam O’Looney, the leader of the hand-selected group of experts hired to troubleshoot the Titanic’s voyage, uncovers the plot and tries to stop the inevitable – but not before a nighttime collision with an iceberg foils everyone’s plans.

A truly unique and thrilling novel, “A Cold Night in the Atlantic” cleverly breathes new life into a piece of American history.
