After a very good quarter DISH says they want to get into the wireless business as well as satellite television.
Will they be successful?
First of all, this is the kind of thinking that I love to hear about. Companies bursting past their old cocoon walls, entering new businesses and becoming successful.
With that said, we have seen many cable television companies try wireless and fail over the last few years. Comcast, Time Warner, Cox and others.
In fact now these cable television companies are trying to sell their wireless data spectrum to Verizon Wireless.
It’s not that cable television companies can’t make it in wireless. They just have to create an entirely new way of thinking about marketing and opportunities and challanges.
Wireless is not like other businesses. It can be very successful for the companies who can grab the ring. The problem is many have tried and only a very few have succeeded.
Now the wireless industry is changing again. Moving toward wireless data and spectrum. Many wireless providers are no longer successful like they once were. And they are in the wireless business. Look at T-Mobile as an example.
So I applaud DISH for thinking in the right direction. I just warn them not to assume wireless will be easy. Will they partner with successful wireless carriers or do it alone? Do they understand the challanges and the opportunities?
There are so many questions I have and concerns I want to warn them about.
Good luck DISH. If done right you can become very successful in wireless. But realize it is a big IF.
