New York City, N.Y, September 29, 2011 — A recent study conducted by the Dicle University School of Medicine in Turkey, has confirmed that a compound found within muscadine grapes can help to prevent oxidative stress and protect the brain in diabetic rats.

Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic antioxidant that is found within many vegetables and fruits, such as the muscadine grape, and has been at the center of a lot of research into its potential health benefits.

The aim of the study was to find out whether or not ellagic acid could help to prevent oxidative stress in rats with diabetes, which in turn can have neuroprotective effects on the brain.
The rats were split into four groups of eight, with two groups having diabetes and the other two groups without. Each group, bar the control group, was assigned either ellagic acid, the diabetes treatment streptozotocin, or a combination of both.

After four weeks, the rats biomarkers were analyzed for oxidative stress levels in the brain and it was found that the group of diabetic rats that were supplemented ellagic acid had less oxidative damage then the other groups. This has led to the conclusion that ellagic acid exhibits potential neuroprotective qualities that warrant further investigation.

Mary Green, spokesperson for muscadine grape health specialists, Muscadinex, commented: “These findings are encouraging, especially at a time when diabetes levels are on the rise due to the increasing levels of obesity being recorded in the US. We are firm believers in the healing potential of the muscadine grape, due its increased levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidants compared to other grape varieties, which is why we have developed Muscadinex.”

Muscadinex is made from the seeds of the fruit. As the respected US Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry wrote: “A total of 88 phenolic compounds of diverse structures were tentatively identified in muscadines, which included 17 in the pulp, 28 in the skin, and 43 in the seeds. Seventeen compounds were identified for the first time in muscadine grapes. The compounds identified in seeds included hydrolyzable tannins, flavanols and condensed tannins, ellagic acid derivatives, and quercetin rhamnoside.” Muscadine is the only grape to have resveratrol in the seeds.

Muscadinex is also packed with beneficial polyphenols and antioxidants. Each capsule contains 650mg of pure muscadine grape powder so you benefit by getting a healthy dose of active muscadine seed polyphenols like Resveratrol, Ellagic acid and Quercetin.
