John Barth offers tale of separation of people and religion with “Northland”

Northland is a secretive city in the middle of the country built by some of the most powerful men in the country. These right-wing, Christian men wanted to make a safe place for their families to grow and eternally prosper. The residents just want to be left alone so they may live in peace.
The leaders of Northland have decided to hold a press conference in their city with hand-picked media personnel from across the country. They want only the most honest of reporters to come and look over their city and see that there is no hidden agenda.
David Cohen, a journalist from New York, has built himself a reputation of finding the truth in every story he has been assigned. As he prepares for his trip to Northland, he keeps in mind how the United States came to be in its current condition. Crime is on the rise, big business has taken over and everyone fights to survive. The government has no leadership or direction and people have lost faith in the legal system.
As people’s faith in the system fails, they have come to believe the segregated city of Northland has a hidden agenda, a sinister plan to change the way Americans live their lives. Since it appears the country’s citizens have no recourse but to let the city stand, they have come to mistrust it more.
Now David, his assistant, Connie, and other members of the media have come to the city to discover the secrets of Northland. What will they find? Find out in the thought-provoking pages of this entertaining new book.
