Glasgow, United Kingdom, May 6, 2011 — Airline Company, Flybe joins the list of airlines forced to increase passenger surcharges, whilst budget airline Easy Jet also increase booking fees.
The struggling economy and adverse weather conditions experienced this past year have put the majority of the Airline industry under immense pressure. As the UK economy remains slow, the soring oil prices have only added to an already heightened costs.
Flybe have now introduced a 3 surcharge per passenger from today, which will take effect on flights booked from 1st September 2011. The company has released the following statement prior to their annual results expected on 30th June.
“We are taking decisive actions to optimise capacity and passenger yields in the UK, including the possible disposal of surplus aircraft. This will ensure that Flybe is strongly placed to benefit from recovery in its core market.”
Jim French, the chief executive had this to say; “Against an extremely challenging macro-economic backdrop in our core UK market, Flybe performed strongly. This further underlines the resilience and flexibility of our business model.”
He went on to say these actions; to impose surcharges will ensure Flybe are able to recover from the current dip in the market. Figures showed a reduced number of passengers during the months of February and March, yet Flybe have said their business sector had remained strong, which in total accounts for 45% of passengers.
Elsewhere EasyJet known best for their budget flights and cheap holidays increased its fees for the third time in seven months. The ‘low-cost’ airline has increased their booking fees to 8 when using a debit card.
It was for this reason the consumer magazine, Which?, reported them to the Office of Fair Trading for overcharging on debit card bookings, a service that they say should only cost the company 20 pence.
Easyjet spokesperson has hit back saying they remain one of the cheapest flight companies within the airline industry.
