From Cross-Examination to Closing, Author Raymond P. Niro Shows Readers How to Win IP Trials
Going beyond pedantic discussions of intellectual property law and full court transcripts, “GO FOR IT!” takes readers into the heart of each trial to the critical moments that could make or break the case. Niro shows readers what others can’t: how to conduct a seamless cross examination and then tie the pieces of a complex case together while drawing on emotion in the closing argument, achieving multi-million dollar verdicts not by chance but by deliberate strategy and skill.
With a career spanning over two decades, Niro shares the testimony in addition to his own insights for 18 unique cases involving inventors of everything from DeWalt power tools, to Internet auctions, to secret formulas for pre-cooked Italian sausage. In one example, Niro introduces readers to a case involving a controversy over patent rights to a data relay system:
Perhaps once in a lifetime, you may get a chance to really make a difference in someone’s life. I have been lucky enough to have been given multiple chances. This case is one example. The patent was poorly written. The case seemed dead and came back to life through an appeal no one in our office (except Chris Lee and me) was willing to take.
Against all expectations, relying solely on adverse witness during cross examination and a one-hour video from the dying inventor, Frank Calabrese, Niro and his colleague won the case. Some call it luck, but the fact is that Niro has perfected the art of finesse and calculated risk in the courtroom, coaxing the truth out of witnesses through compelling cross-examination. Fascinating in its own right and vastly informative for any attorney or student of law, “GO FOR IT!” shows readers how to seize the opportunities within any case and learn the skills necessary to win each one.
Raymond P. Niro has worked for over 40 years in intellectual property law, representing corporate and individual clients in more than 300 major cases, and is the senior partner of his firm. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and his Juris Doctorate from the George Washington University Law School. “GO FOR IT!” is Niro’s first published book.
