The story of “Millstone” unfolds with Alex Stone, a vigilante of sorts, fueled solely by his deep hatred for all breeds of child abusers. Alex takes it upon himself to rid the world of these criminals, and seeks to eliminate as many as humanly possible. Unfortunately, his efforts are brought to a tragic end sooner than he would have intended. Minutes after murdering his fifth victim, Alex is killed during a confrontation with the police. Immediately following his death, Alex is cast into the eager embraces of hell. He is now faced with the demons of his past, present and future which unfold in this violent story. Bennett writes:
Stopping just beyond the threshold, he took a brief look around before beginning. Alex’s gaze fell on the snoring shape on the bed. It’s only a Five – kill it and go, he thought. A rushing sort of chill, the type thought to be caused by someone stepping on one’s grave shot up Alex’s spine into the base of his skull. He glanced over his shoulder at the seven little faces staring deeply into his soul. In and out, he quietly reminded himself.
All the while his heart’s desire wanted to make a much deeper, statement out of this sleeping monster. In and out, his mind reiterated. Alex pulled his vision away from the children’s faces on the milk cartons, sweeping it back around onto Five. For a moment he could have swore he heard seven youthful voices pleading for a more ardent retribution than a simple cut and run.
The originality of “Millstone” twists together a raw voice and an “in your face” level of savagery sure to pull readers in from the first page and hold them until the very last.
About the Author: L.E. Bennett, who was illiterate until the age of 42, taught himself to read and write. His determination to learn these skills was driven by a deep desire to write a book. With no clue of how to begin, Bennett chose horror-fiction as his vehicle. He chose this genre because of the inspiration gathered from the first book that he successfully read on his own, “The Damnation Gang” by Clive Barker. It was then that the character Alex Stone came to life, and three years later Bennett completed his first draft of “Millstone.” Bennett currently resides in eastern Oregon.
