Birmingham, AL, June 4, 2010 — “The Hidden Face of Laura” is a true story about Laura Mae Miller, a little girl raised in poverty and abuse in Birmingham, Ala., who faces crushing blows throughout her life.

Throughout her childhood, Laura is sexually molested by her older brother, ignored by her family and ridiculed by her classmates, all while barely surviving in her family’s shack of a home.

“No little girl should have to experience the gruesome things my brother did to me, but I had to put up with him my whole childhood,” Laura said.

Laura marries at the age of 18, with the hopes of a better life, only to find out she has married an alcoholic. Throughout her marriage, she is battered and bruised and with no one to turn to, she is completely alone.

Through it all, Laura’s love for her children gives her the courage she needs to break the chains of fear. Laura finally steps forth and takes control of her life. She studies her children’s schoolbooks until she is confident enough to pass the General Educational Development test and ultimately complete nursing school.

Written by Elaine Mims, a long-time friend of Laura, “The Hidden Face of Laura” is a triumphant, heart-warming story of a woman’s struggle to survive.
