HTC went from zero to hero in the last two years. Two years ago they were virtually an unknown in the US smart phone marketplace. Today they are at the top of the list along with other brand name companies we grew up with.
Before two years ago HTC did not have brand name identity. Not in the US marketplace anyway. They made smart phones for other brands.
Jon Maron, the Vice President of Marketing for HTC Americas was in charge of punching them onto the map. Two years later we all know the HTC brand. He did it.
That does not mean all of us are a customer of HTC. Far from it. But one step at a time.
Thanks to HTC’s success with Google Android and a helluva lot of successful advertising, public relations and marketing, they are finally on the Interbrand Top 100 Brands list for the first time.
HTC sold more smart phones in the US in 3Q compared with giants like Apple and Samsung. Much of that may have to do with the fact that Apple customers just didn’t buy an iPhone during 3Q waiting for the next version. But whatever it takes HTC has got to love it.
I met with HTC at the CTIA show in Las Vegas and Orlando several times during the last few years. A few short years ago they were a total unknown. They are rapidly building their way into the marketplace.
It sort of reminds me of MCI in the 1990′s. I worked with many companies over the years including MCI and I have to say back then they were rockin. Sort of like HTC is starting to do now.
HTC has to fight every day for mind share and for market share and that will never stop. However they can all take a big bow because their performance during the last two years has been very good.
As the smart phone sector continues to explode we will see whether they can continue this success streak.
