While leisurely vacationing in Aruba, visions consume the mind of Roman, a fit and retired 60-year-old U.S. executive. Yet as eerily similar occurrences keep happening in the world around him, Roman’s visions quickly turn into haunting nightmares.
Author Joseph Pilarski writes, “Jan had awakened from sleep with a brilliant insight on many occasions, only to discover that these ingenious insights didn’t survive the scrutiny of daylight. ‘What seemed deep and meaningful in the middle of the night sometimes appeared ridiculous in the light of day,’ he thought, but not this time…”
Roman’s world becomes all too ironic. Menacing navy vessels arrive on the coast of Aruba, the body of a tortured man is found floating down the Hudson, a Mombasa airport is blown away, a mysterious woman keeps reappearing, and all the while, his dreams keep revealing the same foreboding scenarios. The scenarios in his dreams were revealed with a twist. For example, he is faced by an enormous eye. In a panic, Roman writes letters to the Pentagon, Homeland Security and the White House. When he is unable to alert anyone, he decides to write a book about his dreams. He entitles it “Chinese Chess,” and when it gets read by a Pentagon analyst, Roman’s dreams turn into a global chase to avert a disaster of Biblical proportions. Together, Roman and the analyst must somehow warn the nation of what may soon become the next Armageddon.
“Chinese Chess” is an enthralling combination of well-crafted characters and perfectly detailed events. Pilarski masterminds an American investigation that will leave even the biggest skeptics intrigued.
