Lenovo just unseated Dell as the number two computer maker when you look at shipments. I expect them to keep up the pace through additional acquisitions.
Both Gartner and IDC just rated Lenovo as the new number two.
As consumers budgets tighten up and as technology changes, so does the demand for products. This is the kind of market were changes can occur quickly. Competitors either hit or miss as the tech world transforms itself.
Today the market is shifting from laptops and desktops to mobile devices like tablets and handhelds.
Knowing what the customer will want next year and being there is crucial for success.
Lenovo has been growing rapidly through acquisitions like the IBM Thinkpad business in 2005.
Hewlett-Packard is number one and is in Lenovo’s sites. They are taking aim and will give HP a run for its money.
Dell falls to number three.
Lenovo has grown through acquisitions and organically through aggressive pricing. Dell remains more profitable.
This is happening as consumer spending is changing. They are buying less desktops and laptops and focusing more on mobile devices like handhelds and tablet computers. That’s the new target. Who will be the leader in that space going forward?
This industry is transitioning. We can see it will look completely different over the next few years both the technology and the corporate leadership.
Will Lenovo move up? Will HP get out? Will Dell recover? Will someone else enter and change the marketplace?
Who knows, but this is a very interesting horserace, isn’t it?
