New Children’s Book Teaches Important Lessons through Rhyme and Reason

Inspired by her own rescue dog, Petey, author Debra Bruno tells the whimsical tale of love, survival and lessons learned in her new children’s book, “Petey’s Tale: A Story of Survival Inspired by Actual Events.”

After disobeying his mother’s warnings never to stray, Petey suddenly finds himself very lost and far away from home. The story takes readers through the trials and tribulations of a puppy doing his best to survive life on the streets while attempting to find his way home to his family. In the end, Petey realizes that his mother really does know best and that he should always take her loving advice to heart.

When asked of her motivation in writing “Petey’s Tale,” Bruno states, “Petey was a stray and managed to survive on the streets for almost one month before he was picked up by the Humane Society and brought to a local animal shelter. I so admire and respect this little dog and his determination to survive against all odds. I thought that I would write this little tribute to Petey and share his story with children while also sending the important message of obeying your parents. I also hope to promote the adoption of shelter animals, as there are thousands in need of loving homes.”

A native New Yorker, Debra Bruno is a retired bank executive currently living in Northern California.
