Michigan’s Denard Robinson Will Play vs. Purdue
Michigan sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson, a likely Heisman finalist, practiced on Monday and is expected to start this week at Purdue after being sidelined with headaches and dizziness in Saturday’s win against Illinois, which made Michigan bowl eligible.
Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez said Robinson has been cleared to resume practicing and is “good to go” for the Purdue game. Rodriguez didn’t confirm whether Robinson had suffered a concussion but said the quarterback had symptoms but passed all his medical tests Sunday. During the game the QB “he had signs of not being completely there,” but Rodriguez wouldn’t confirm a concussion specifically. The team has not determined what play it occurred on, and Rodriguez said Robinson did not remember.
Robinson has started each of Michigan’s first nine games. He ranks second nationally in rushing (149.9 ypg) and 11th in pass efficiency (160.9 rating). “Shoelace” has missed time in three of Michigan’s games with injuries. He has received 17 or more carries in eight of nine games — Robinson had five against Bowling Green before leaving in the first quarter with an injury — and 21 or more carries in four games. Robinson threw for 305 yards and rushed for 62 before leaving against the Illini. He has rushed for 1,349 yards this season and is 146 away from breaking the major college record for yards rushing by a QB. Air Force’s Beau Morgan had 1,494 yards rushing in 1996.
Rodriguez added that freshman tailback Teric Jones suffered an ACL injury in his right knee on a kickoff return in the Illinois game. He will not play again this season.
