Boston College coach Frank Spaziani says he will start a new quarterback this week against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish – bet on Bodog’s NCAA odds. Sophomore Mike Marscovetra or freshman Chase Rettig will start for the Eagles in place of Shinskie, who was 11-for-25 for 130 yards and two interceptions against the Hokies before being replaced by Marscovetra. It was the first shutout of Boston College in 149 games since 1998.
Marscovetra, who has yet to start a collegiate game, went 5-for-7 for 50 yards and could not even get the Eagles into Virginia Tech territory. In his first two games, he was 3-for-6 with a touchdown and an interception.
Originally the plan was to redshirt Rettig but Spaziani admitted things have changed. Spaziani said he could hold the decision on the new starter — or at least keep it to himself — right up until game time.
“We’ll make a decision by the end of the week,” said Spaziani. “I don’t think anything’s obvious . . . maybe (the decision) will be made Saturday night. … All three quarterbacks have the physical talents to win at this level. They have arm strength and they physically can do what we’re asking them to do. But there’s a lot more to it than that, obviously.”
Spaziani also said the suspension for a violation of team rules of starting defensive tackle Conor O’Neal has been lifted after one game and that O’Neal will be available Saturday night against the Irish.
