Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton is the talk of college football right now, but not so much because he is having a stellar season and is the Heisman Trophy front-runner for a team that could play in the BCS National Championship Game.

Newton has been the subject of reports that have questioned his recruitment to Mississippi State in terms of Newton’s father asking for cash to lure his son as well as Newton’s academic standing when he was at Florida before transferring. These allegations could cost him the Heisman if enough voters are scared off in the wake of what happened with Reggie Bush.

But of one thing there is no doubt: Newton will start this week’s game against Georgia, with Auburn able to clinch the SEC West and a trip to the conference title game with a victory in its final home game of the season.

“Cameron Newton will be playing Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs and I want to get that off the table,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said simply, brushing off any potential eligibility questions of his star.

Mississippi State reported issues with the recruitment of Newton to the SEC back in January, the school confirmed in a statement this week. Auburn has repeatedly said that it has looked into the recruitment of Newton and that he is eligible to play.

Auburn is off to the fourth 10-0 start in school history, joining the teams from 2004, 1993 and 1957. If the Tigers slip up this week they not only would lose a potential national championship game spot but also could lose the SEC West if they don’t win the Iron Bowl against Alabama in two weeks. Georgia has won the past four meetings with Auburn but the Tigers opened as 7-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.
