Freshman Michael Box’s turn as Connecticut’s starting quarterback will last only a week as Box won’t be able to play in the Huskies’ Big East home opener against West Virginia in Friday night’s lone NCAA game – UConn opened as a 7-point underdog on Bodog’s NCAA odds and there will be live betting available.
Box suffered a head injury during the second half of last Saturday’s 26-0 loss at Louisville and was replaced by senior Zach Frazer. Yet early this week Box was still listed as the starter against the Mountaineers. However, coach Randy Edsall said he noticed some things in practice Wednesday that caused him concern. Then the Huskies’ medical staff examined Box and ruled him out Friday.
“At the start of practice [Wednesday], again, there were things that I was concerned with. I just didn’t see the guy that I’ve seen,” Edsall said to the Hartford Courant. “I put Zach up with the first team and I called [trainer Bob Howard] over and I said, ‘You guys need to check Mike. I just don’t think he’s right.’ … I think Mike admitted to ‘em then that, yeah, there are some things going on and he’s not the same. He still has the concussion.”
Box was 4-for-12 for 35 yards with one interception and rushed five times for 22 yards against Louisville. He had replaced previous starter Cody Endres, who was suspended for the rest of the year for violating school policy. Frazer, who starts Friday, actually opened the season as the starter and was for the first four games but was replaced by Endres. Frazer was 6-for-8 for 52 yards in relief of Box against Louisville. Frazer is 53 of 99 for 605 yards, two touchdowns and one interception this season.
