On a short week and with nothing to play for, the Philadelphia Eagles are likely to sit several starters for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, including star quarterback Michael Vick.
Eagles coach Andy Reid is especially concerned about Vick (quadriceps), wide receiver DeSean Jackson (foot) and cornerback Asante Samuel (knee). And of course the team was forced to play on Tuesday night, losing to Minnesota, after last Sunday’s game was postponed due to a blizzard.
Reid is expected to give those players and some other key regulars extra time to get healthier for the playoffs, which start the following weekend. That Tuesday loss meant the Eagles are locked into the No. 3 seed in the NFC no matter what happens this weekend. Vick was battered in that loss to the Vikings as the Eagles’ offensive line surrendered six sacks, matching the most they allowed in a single game this season.
“You have to look at what’s at stake if you play them, injury-wise,” Reid said. “Some guys need the play time, some guys need the rest time. So I have to look at who those guys are and what situations I put them in and so on. But at the same time, you want to win the game no matter who’s playing. … We’ll see [what happens].”
Kevin Kolb would start at quarterback if Vick can’t go. Dallas interim coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys wouldn’t prepare any differently no matter what the Eagles do even though Vick is much more mobile than Kolb.
“The rule is you prepare for the system,” Garrett said. “But certainly these two quarterbacks are different in their implementations of the system. They’re both good players.”
There is no line on this game yet on Bodog’s NFL odds.
