Romo was hurt with 12:07 to play in the second quarter after completing a pass to receiver Miles Austin. Romo was hit by Giants weakside linebacker Michael Boley, who came on a blitz. Romo’s left shoulder crashed into the turf as Boley tackled him to the ground. When the QB went down, the Cowboys were leading 10-7. But after Romo was injured and Jon Kitna replaced him, the Giants went on a 31-10 run to take a 38-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Cowboys are now off to their worst start since 1989 and the playoffs are a pipe dream for a team that was the preseason NFC favorite on Bodog’s NFL odds.
“When he hit the ground, I heard he let out a little scream,” Boley said. “So I knew something was up.”
In 2009, Romo was the first quarterback in franchise history to be on the field for every offensive snap. Cowboys WR Roy Williams actually had the audacity to say he doesn’t expect the team to lose any momentum now that Kitna will have to step in. What momentum? Before Monday, Kitna hadn’t played since the first four games of the 2008 season in Detroit. On Monday, he was 16 of 33 for 187 yards and two late 15-yard touchdown passes to Dez Bryant that made the score close than it should have been.
“Tony is our starter, but Jon is just as good,” Williams said. “We are going to work this week in practice so we can get the timing down with the receivers. But I have complete faith in him. I have played with him for three years and I know how good he is.”
