Despite dealing with a sore calf, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says there’s no doubt he will be playing this week against the Houston Texans. New York is a 7-point favorite on Bodog’s NFL odds.
Sanchez injured his right calf after he was sacked in the third quarter of the Jets’ 26-20 overtime victory over the Browns last week. Sanchez hobbled off the field and was seen on the trainer’s table shortly after while backup Mark Brunell warmed up on the sidelines. But Sanchez remained in the game, eventually throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes with 16 seconds remaining in OT. The Jets (7-2) became the first team in league history to win consecutive overtime road games.
“After the trainers looked at it and determined it wasn’t a serious ligament injury or a knee injury, they were going to leave it up to me as far as pain tolerance [was concerned],” Sanchez said. “And once they left it up to me, I knew I was going to go back in.”
Only two quarterbacks have a worse completion percentage than Sanchez’s 54.5% and he has an average QB rating of 80.5, but the second-year signal-caller has proven in the past few weeks he will make the big plays when they count. Sanchez was 14 of 21 for 170 yards and a touchdown after injuring his calf against the Browns. A week earlier, Sanchez was 10 of 13 for 144 yards on his last two possessions in the fourth quarter and only possession in overtime to beat the Detroit Lions.
The Jets are off to their best start since 1986.
