Reed was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list in September so he could sufficiently recover from off-season hip surgery. But he returned to practice for the first time on Wednesday and it appears he might debut on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Baltimore is a 14-point favorite on Bodog’s NFL odds.
“I think we’ll be prudent, certainly, but there’s definitely a possibility he can play,” coach John Harbaugh said. “It’s going to be based on how he responds to practicing football at a fast pace.”
Reed is one of the great safeties in NFL history as he is a former Defensive Player of the Year who has been named to six Pro Bowls, had 46 interceptions and scored 13 touchdowns. He admitted after his first practice to still having soreness in his surgically repaired hip, as well as problems with a nerve impingement in his neck/shoulder area. He said that the nerve impingement has limited his ability to tackle in recent years.
“I think time off definitely helped it, but getting back into the game, it’s going to come right back,” Reed said. “It never left.”
It’s certainly possible the Ravens wait a week to activate Reed because they should have no trouble with the winless Bills and then the club is on a bye. The team has 21 days to activate Reed from the PUP list and place him on the 53-man active roster.
