Kahnawake,qc, October 24, 2010 — The New Orleans Saints might get their defensive MVP from last season’s Super Bowl team back for the first time this season in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns.

Safety Darren Sharper, who tied for the NFL lead in 2009 with nine interceptions and was named an All-Pro, took part in his first practice on Wednesday and hopes to play against the Browns. New Orleans is -14 on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Sharper spent the first six weeks of the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list after he spent the summer recovering from an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The 34-year-old said he and the team will evaluate how his body responds to the increased workload and how he performs through Friday’s practice. Sharper admits he’s not 100 percent quite yet, but “If it went (by) my gut, I’m ready to play.”

Coach Sean Payton wouldn’t commit to anything.

“We’ll see,” Payton said. “I wouldn’t rule it out, and yet I wouldn’t say it’s a definite.”

However, the Saints’ secondary might need Sharper. Right cornerback Tracy Porter has missed the last two games after having arthroscopic knee surgery and will likely miss Sunday’s game with Cleveland. The status of left cornerback Jabari Greer, who injured his left shoulder last week at Tampa Bay, might not be known until Friday. And another cornerback, Randall Gay, was put on season-ending injured reserve this week because of symptoms from a concussion suffered on Sept. 20.

Sharper may not get his exact spot back as Payton said it was unlikely the Saints would move Malcolm Jenkins, who was switched from cornerback to free safety this spring, back to his old position. Jenkins has started the first six games at free safety.
