The San Francisco 49ers are right back in the NFC West race following Monday night’s dominant 27-6 win in Arizona, but that victory was costly as star running back Frank Gore reportedly broke his hip and will be lost for the season.
Gore left Monday night’s game after just five rush attempts with the injury and did not return. He had runs of 25 and 15 yards on San Francisco’s opening possession, but went out later in the drive. He returned for two plays to start the next drive, but spent the rest of the first half on the sideline. Gore finished with five carries for 52 yards. Gore ends his season with 203 carries for 853 yards, both team highs, and three rushing touchdowns. He also has 46 catches for 452 receiving yards and two TD receptions.
The 49ers will now turn to Brian Westbrook as the lead running back heading into Week 13 and going forward. Westbrook was tremendous against the Cards, rushing for 136 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. It was his 21st career 100-yard game, but first since Dec. 7, 2008, for Philadelphia against the New York Giants. The 49ers rushed for 261 yards, by far their season high and the most allowed by the Cardinals this season. Arizona had 13 yards rushing so the Niners became the fifth team since 1986 to rush for 250 yards while holding the opposition to 20 or fewer yards rushing.
San Francisco has won four of its last six games to pull within one game of the St. Louis Rams in the NFC West. The Niners, who have just one road win, are at Green Bay this Sunday. Bet on the game with Bodog’s NFL odds.
