At 7-6 and a game behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, the San Diego Chargers may well have to win their final three games to return to the playoffs and claim the division yet again. The Bolts are on a short week in Week 15 after crushing the Chiefs last Sunday and they likely won’t have All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates for Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Gates has been playing through a torn plantar fascia in his right foot and was inactive for this past Sunday’s victory over Kansas City. He hasn’t practiced this week and the quick turnaround doesn’t bode well for him. Gates was originally hurt Oct. 31 against the Tennessee Titans. He missed the next two games, but he played in Weeks 12 and 13. Despite missing three full games, Gates leads the Chargers with 50 catches, 782 yards and 10 touchdowns. Randy McMichael would start if Gates can’t go.
Meanwhile, Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson will play Thursday. Jackson has missed essentially the entire season as he was in a contentious contract dispute with the team into the season, was suspended by the NFL for a second DUI arrest, served a three-game roster-exempt penalty once he signed a contract and left injured after two snaps in his first game, Nov. 28 against Indianapolis.
Jackson was active Sunday against the Chiefs, finishing with two receptions for 29 yards. There was some concern about whether he could go again on a short week but he should be good to go.
The 49ers have a Top 10 defense against the run so the Chargers may be forced to pass often. In the seven games when the Chargers threw more passes than runs this year, they are 1-6.
