The Seattle Seahawks’ chances of holding onto their lead in the NFC West may well depend on the injured foot of top wide receiver Mike Williams.
Williams, who leads the Seahawks with 52 receptions this year for 654 yards, suffered an injury to the bottom of his foot in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Saints and was seen in a plastic protective boot after the game. Williams wouldn’t return after making six catches for 109 yards.
“He was running down the field and felt something pop,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. “It’s very unusual. They know exactly what it is. I can’t explain it to you, and they’ve never seen it before. So it’s an unusual thing that he’s got. Something in the bottom of his foot. … It might not be as serious as we originally thought, but we’re going to have to wait and see how he responds.”
The Seattle Times is reporting that the injury “could be serious.” Williams has been one of the stories of the year. The 2005 first-round pick for the Detroit Lions hadn’t played in the NFL since 2007 when he had stints with Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans. But his former Southern Cal coach, Carroll, took a chance on him and it has paid off. Williams ranks tied for fourth in the NFL with 20 third-down catches this year. He ranks third with converting third-down receptions into first downs with 16 conversions.
Seattle has played only two home games in the past eight weeks, the result of a schedule that will now have Seattle at home the next two weeks against Kansas City and Carolina and with four total home games in the final six. The Seahawks are 1-point home dogs against the Chiefs this week on Bodog’s NFL odds.
