Kahnawake, QC, December 21, 2010 — The Tim Tebow era has officially begun in Denver as the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Florida started his first game on Sunday and apparently will remain the starter for the Broncos’ final two games of this season.

Because normal starter Kyle Orton had bruised ribs, Tebow got the call Sunday against Oakland and showed some good signs in the loss. He became the third player to throw a TD pass at least 30 yards (33-yard score to Brandon Lloyd) and run for a score of at least 40 yards in the same game (he had a 40-yard scoring run). Overall he finished 8 for 16 for 138 yards and ran for 78 more yards. Kordell Stewart in 2000 and Michael Vick in 2002 are the only other players to have running and throwing TDs like Tebow’s.

“If we’re going to put him out there, we might as well turn him loose,” Broncos WR Jabar Gaffney said to reporters. “He can throw. We just can’t handcuff him. Let him throw. Turn him loose and let him play.”

Orton, who started the first 13 games at quarterback, came out for pregame warmups but not in full uniform and never took a throw or snap. He was listed as the No. 3 quarterback Sunday, which means he could have entered the game only if Tebow and backup Brady Quinn became too injured to play.

Because the Broncos are out of the playoff hunt and also in part because their final two games are at home, Tebow is expected to finish the season as the starter – he is a drawing card that Orton is not. In fact, Tebow’s jersey was the top seller in the NFL this season. Denver plays Houston this Sunday and finishes against San Diego. Bet on those games on Bodog’s NFL odds.
