University of Miami interim head coach Jeff Stoutland still has yet to say whether junior Jacory Harris or freshman Stephan Morris will start at quarterback for this Friday’s Sun Bowl game in El Paso against Notre Dame. Bet on the game with Bodog’s NCAA Football odds.

Harris, a two-year starter who has thrown for 1,756 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season, missed the last four games after suffering a concussion against Virginia Tech on Oct. 30. Morris has thrown for 958 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions in four games in place of Harris and went 2-2 in his four starts. Combined with Morris and quarterback Spencer Whipple, UM quarterbacks have combined to throw 23 interceptions, tied for worst in the nation with Buffalo.

Stoutland is the coach of the Hurricanes after Miami fired Randy Shannon following a regular-season finale home loss to South Florida. The school has since hired former Temple coach Al Golden as Shannon’s replacement but he is focusing on recruiting and other matters while Stoutland coaches the bowl game. Golden has not commented regarding the team’s quarterback situation

Notre Dame coaches say they are preparing for both Miami quarterbacks.

“We’re just going to defend like we always do and focus on ourselves and how we conduct our business,” defensive coordinator Bob Diaco said. “That’s all we’ve done every year and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

Prolonging an announcement could be a ploy to force Notre Dame to get ready for both quarterbacks, although Irish coach Brian Kelly said UM’s choice would not make a difference in preparations.

“Their system is more what we’re defending than the quarterbacks,” Kelly said.

Notre Dame and Miami haven’t met since 1990.
