At 4-7, the Minnesota Vikings must win out to have any shot at a playoff berth, but when the Vikes face the improving Buffalo Bills on Sunday in Minneapolis they may be without two of their best offensive players.
Running back Adrian Peterson and left guard Steve Hutchinson both could be game-time decisions against the Bills. Peterson sprained his left ankle in the second quarter of last Sunday’s win against the Washington Redskins and didn’t return. He had an MRI on the ankle and interim coach Leslie Frazier said it revealed no more damage than a sprain. But it’s still not clear if the NFL’s third-leading rusher will be ready to go against the Bills. Rookie Toby Gerhart would start if Peterson can’t play.
Hutchinson, possibly the best guard in the NFL, fractured his right thumb in the second quarter of the game against Redskins. He finished that game and said he plans to play against the Bills, too. However, he admitted that might not be possible if he can’t use his fingers to block effectively with a cast on his hand. Hutchinson has started 131 consecutive games.
“I have had plenty of sprains where you can just put a piece of molded plastic and tape it up, and you still have the ability to use most of your hand,” Hutchinson said. “With a fracture, it’s a little different story.”
Rookie Chris DeGeare would replace Hutchinson. And the defense isn’t immune as linebacker Ray Edwards has a high ankle sprain and also could be a game-time decision. Brian Robison would replace Edwards if he’s unable to go.
The Vikings are 6-point favorites over the Bills on Bodog’s NFL odds.
