I bought this unit to permit me to geotag photos from an upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon in a couple of weeks and to the Dominican Republic later. I attached it to the shoe mount of my D-90 very first, and then to the shoulder-strap mount (included). From a cold begin correct out of the box, it locked on to a minimum of three satellites (solid green indicator) within 30 seconds. Afterward, it needed no additional than 2-3 seconds to get a locked. It records latitude & longitude (d-m-s), elevation (m), and UTC date/time. I examined the test photos using the Geotag feature of Nikon’s View NX photo browser, which connects to Google Map / Satellite. The tag was within 10 feet (if not exactly on) of the spot where I snapped the photos.

I have had the GP-1 for a couple of months and experimented extensively with it tied to my Nikon D3. I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 in my workflow and the GPS Data it appropriate there. You can also read it in the metadata on the camera’s screen. I was concerned about some of the other reviews but elected to gamble on it. I have not been disappointed in any way. If you can see the southern sky it responds very quickly, even from a cold begin.
