Atlanta, GA, August 11, 2011 — In today’s Wall Street Journal reporter Sven Grundberg wrote a great piece on the changing smart phone market.

He said according to a Gartner report, Nokia kept its place as the top smartphone manufacturer when measured by units sold, in the second quarter of the year.

That headline sounds great right? Unfortunately if you keep reading the story you see that Nokia is dropping like a rock.

Nokia sold almost 98 million smartphones worldwide in Q2, but that compared to 112 units 2Q last year. Their market share has dropped from 30% to 23% and it continues to fall.

The wireless smart phone market is much stronger. Worldwide handset sales totaled 429 million in 2Q, which is a rise of almost 17% from one year earlier.

Google Android OS and Apple iPhone have risen sharply over the same period. So have other smart phone makers like ZTE and Samsung.

RIM Blackberry, like Nokia is dropping fast from 19% a year ago to 12% today.

What does this mean?

INTERESTING TRENDS:

Smart phones are continuing to grow rapidly. So are their features, Apps and social sites.

Traditional handset growth is falling.

Traditional smartphone growth is also falling.

New smartphones like Google Android, Apple iPhone and assorted others are growing rapidly. They are where the growth is over the last few years.

The marketplace is changing rapidly. It looks very different from just a few short years ago. If we move out another few years it may look completely different from today.

This is both good and bad, depending who you are. Some will continue to grow rapidly, while others will continue to drop like a rock.

Expect some surprises. Some who are dropping today may turnaround. And some who are showing strong growth today may fall off the fast track.

These things happen often and quickly so keep your eyes open.

The wireless industry and the smart phone sector is in flux. That means there is lots of opportunity, lots of risk and lots of change ahead.

It will be a very interesting marketplace to watch in coming years.
