Smart phones typically cost more than plain cell phones. We have seen many smart phones with a wide range of pricing from around $50 to several hundred dollars.

Nokia and Microsoft are offering their new Lumia 710 at the $49.99 level. This is not new for the category. There are plenty of phones at that price.

The question is can Nokia and Microsoft do something big and bold and new and different to shake and excite the market to take another look at them? That’s what they need. Otherwise this product will not rise to the occasion.

They are starting with T-Mobile who has the right mix of customers for this lower cost smart phone. This phone, if marketed correctly, could be successful at bridging the gap for users of traditional cell phones and smart phones. Will it be marketed correctly?

This is the Nokia and Microsoft new smart phone coming out party. Will anyone show up? We’ll have to wait and see. I hope so, but am not yet convinced.
