Long Beach, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/20/2014 -- As an actress and stand-up comedienne, Vanessa A. Ryan has become used to switching her persona from serious to funny, funny to evil and then back to ‘normal’ in time to get home to her much-loved rescued cats. This unique skill has stood Ryan is good stead for the release of her acclaimed debut novel, which rips up the book of literary convention to meld evil and humor into a narrative that defies any single genre.

‘A Blue Moon’ fuses fact and fiction to leave readers questioning everything they thought they knew about envy.

Synopsis
A Blue Moon is Vanessa A. Ryan's first novel, a genre-bending dark urban fantasy, told with macabre humor.

Lorrie Duncan, an abstract painter working as a substitute teacher, dreams of making it big in the art world when she’s not busy looking for Mr. Right. She seems on the verge of getting what she wants, at least with respect to her career, because her current boyfriend Marty is a rising star in the L.A. art scene. But when a fortuneteller gives her a medallion with malevolent powers, her life and plans fall apart. Now to survive, she finds herself in a race to discover its secret, before it destroys everything she holds dear.

“Macabre humor is definitely required to tackle a subject like this,” admits Ryan. “Envy often starts out as a bit of an emotional niggle but can rapidly evolve to consume its victim and lead them to take unorthodox actions. My narrative explores this with gusto, with plenty of evil thrown into the fray.”

Continuing, “It will delight those who like a dark story, those craving subtle humor and – believe it or not – those obsessed with the quirky dating culture of Sex and the City. It really is a novel for all, while being anything but normal.”

Readers agree. In fact, since its release, the novel has garnered rave reviews. For example, Luca Rossi comments, “Unfortunately I started reading A Blue Moon in the late night. I had it on my Kindle since a couple of days and I was curious about how Vanessa Ryan could write. Well, I just could not put it down. The book was simply amazing. I read until the early morning and the day after I started reading it again. I loved the intimate parts. Vanessa can handle them perfectly: never too much, never too few. There are enough plots twists to keep you constantly amazed and enthralled. The author can also make the paranormal so real! Some parts were also very funny! I also appreciated a lot Vanessa's elegant writing style and her unique technique. I would recommend A Blue Moon to all my friends.”

Samaris adds, “This book definitely puts a new perspective on be careful what you wish for. What’s a girl to do when you are looking at multiple counts of murder and have nowhere to go? Read the book and find out.”
