Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is not a difficult disease to note in a horse, however, it is difficult to differentiate from other neurological diseases. A horse with EPM will display symptoms such as; ataxia, muscle loss, weakness, spasticity, and incoordination. EPM is a disease found throughout North America caused by a single-celled organism of protozoa known as Sarcocystis neurona. This long lasting protozoon takes host of the horse, attacking his/her central nervous system. In some horses, symptoms begin to develop within weeks of infection but in others signs may not appear for up to five years after infection.

The Sarcocystis neurona prtotoza relies on hosts to survives, infecting two hosts in its life cycle. The protozoa’s first host is primarily the opossum but can also infect rats, felines, skunk, and racoons. These predator animals consume the protozoa and defecate the flora into the environment. The horse consumes the fecal matter when present within their pasture, hay, or feed bunks and the protozoa infect them. As the protozoa are digested, the flora becomes absorbed in the intestines, traveling through the blood stream, eventually reaching the brain. The protozoa lives within the equine host for the duration of its life as this condition cannot be transferred from horse to horse.
