Australian Author Provides Aids for Teaching ADHD Children

Her latest work, My Very Own Alphabet App, includes the character Angus that will made into a plush toy to facilitate learning.

Allansford, Australia -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/03/2014 -- A mother of three boys and a school administrator in Victoria, Australia, Wendy Coyle has spent a good part of her adult life around children. When her oldest son, Jack, was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in 2005, she turned to writing children’s books as a way of reaching Jack and others afflicted with ADHD.

Over the past few years, she has focused – as much she can as a busy mother – on promoting these books so others may benefit.

“It was not my intention to write a book originally,” she recalled. “I just kept putting bits and pieces down on paper as different situations popped up. In 2008, I started to wonder if I would be able to help other kids with ADHD.”

Thus far she has self-published two books: The Naughty Kid, a children's picture book about a boy with ADHD and My Very Own Alphabet Book, a personalized board book that helps children learn the alphabet. There is also a mobile app version of the book of My Very Own Alphabet App.

In order to enhance the learning potential of her alphabet book, which features Angus the Alphabet Ant, Wendy designed a plush toy version of Angus.

“As a package, I think both plush Angus and the book or app would be a fabulous learning tool,” she said. “Children love to be able to associate characters with their books and also role-play as they are reading and learning.”

Wendy would like to produce 500 Angus dolls to accompany her alphabet books but needs some financial assistance to do so. She estimates it will cost $5,000 (Australian).

“I’m not able to put any more of our family money into this type of work but I really want to continue because it can really make a positive impact on youngsters,” she said. “So I’m hoping people will support this new project.”

In order to generate capital, Wendy has launched a Pozible crowdfunding campaign, which can be viewed at http://www.pozible.com/project/185887. On the page, you can also see a prototype of Plush Angus.

Donations of any amount are welcome. For $5, backers will receive a digital download of the My Very Own Alphabet App. A $25 contribution is rewarded with the mobile app plus a plush Angus toy. For $250, you can get a plush Angus plus one one-night accommodations at the Mepunga Country Stay, which is 15 minutes from the center of Warrnambool.

“I believe that it's all the small things we do to help our kids learn, which pave a smoother path for them on their journey of life,” Wendy said. “Plush Angus can make a big difference.”
