Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/22/2014 -- Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacteria in cats and dogs. It is most commonly used to treat different types of bacterial skin infections. In dogs, the drug also treats respiratory and urinary tract infections due to E. coli and Staphylcoccus aureus, urinary infections due to Proteus mirabilis and ear infections. Enrofloxacin prevents bacteria from making their DNA, the genetic material that allows them to grow and divide and disrupts their protective membrane.
It is such an effective antibiotic because it can get into every tissue in the body and stays at high levels for a long period of time. Enrofloxacin can make dogs feel nauseas and if they get too high of a dose they may vomit. They may experience dizziness and uncoordinated movements while on the antibiotic and is therefore not recommended in dogs that have seizures. Atopica for Dogs They may become depressed, lethargic and anxious.
Rare side effects of this antibiotic are the development of crystals in the urine and blindness in cats due to retinal degeneration. Small and medium-sized breed dogs between two to eight months old should not take enrofloxacin because it can interfere with cartilage production in the joints, leading to problems like lameness. Cats and dogs that have allergies to quinolones should not be given enrofloxacin. There are no known drug interactions at this time.
