Cellulite: A Summer Guide to the Latest Treatment Options

A May 2014 article on the website of Harper’s Bazaar magazine examines the newest cellulite treatment options. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Medical Corporation offers his comments on the therapies and devices said to offer effective relief to the 90 percent of women thought to suffer from this affliction.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/03/2014 -- On May 9, 2014 Harper’s Bazaar magazine posted an article titled “Can Cellulite Be Erased?” to describe the latest advances in spa services and medical options for treating the skin dimpling said to impact 90 percent of all women. Cellulite is the dappled effect on the skin that results when the vertical bands of connective tissue fracture clotted packets of sub-dermal fat. The most common areas of complaint are the buttocks, thighs, and hips. Even fit and toned athletes aren’t immune to cellulite. And, as one’s skin becomes looser with age, cellulite can become more pronounced. (see: goo.gl/ava2fK)

“Many of the spa treatments offer results that are noticeable at first,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, “but they often melt away over time simply because women who are susceptible to cellulite will eventually have more of it come to the surface. Genetics and hormones play very powerful roles in determining the extent of one’s cellulite.”

The article describes a pair of medical cellulite treatments. The first, Cellulaze, employs a laser to cut the vertical connective bands, melt fat, tighten skin and stimulate the production of collagen. Results are said to become visible within a few weeks. A second technology, called Vasersmooth, uses ultrasound rather than laser energy to accomplish the same thing. Both treatments require the physician to make an incision in the treated area.

“There are some over-the-counter lotions and potions that purport to reduce the appearance of cellulite,” says Dr. Ourian. “These creams are intended to firm up the skin in an attempt to mask the effects of cellulite. It is important to remember that cellulite is a sub dermal issue. As human skin is designed to protect the body, it is unlikely that anti-cellulite lotions will penetrate deeply enough to make much of a difference.”
