Clindamycin: Oral Antibiotic for Dogs & Cats

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/16/2014 -- Clindamycin is an antibiotic that prevents the protein formation of bacteria. It is often used to treat Staphylcoccal infections of the skin, mouth, bone, lung and abdomen. It is able to reach the brain in animals that have meningitis. It fights some methicillin-resistant Staphylcocci and when given at higher doses to treat cats and dogs infected with the protozoa Toxoplasmosis.

For infections involving many different types of bacteria, clindamycin is often combined with other antibiotics to make sure all the bacteria are targeted. The antibiotic reaches high levels in the body. The most common side effect is an upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea which are sometimes bloody. This can be avoided by given it as an injection. It can also cause inflammation of the esophagus and hypersalivation but those effects can be reduced by giving clindamycin with food. Because the drug is broken down in the kidneys and excreted in the urine, animals with liver and kidney disease should be given a lower dose to reduce toxicity.

One antibiotic clindamycin should not be given with is erythromycin. Cat on clindamycin can experience inflammation of the gallbladder, which is typically not serious. If an animal is on cyclosporine, giving clindamycin will lower levels of that drug in the body. Kitten and puppies that are nursing will get clindamycin if the mother is on it and may develop diarrhea as a result.
